Objectives and Educational Activities of the Study Programme
The Bachelor’s Degree Programme in German Language, Literature and German-Speaking Cultures and Civilizations is offered by the Department of German Language at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Tirana. It represents the reorganization of three previously separate study tracks -“German Language, Literature and German-Speaking Civilizations,” “Language and Communication,” and “Translation and Interpreting” – which have now been integrated into a single comprehensive programme. The programme combines courses from all relevant pillars of study, including linguistics, literature, civilization, communication, and translation.
The programme provides:
- advanced knowledge of the German language (written and spoken), literature, and German-speaking civilizations, including a critical understanding of theories and principles in this field of study;
- advanced skills demonstrating a high level of competence and analytical independence, necessary for interpreting and contextualizing literary texts, cultural documents, and complex intercultural communication situations.
The programme has the following objectives:
- to provide in-depth theoretical and practical training in language-related subjects, combining theory and practice from the very beginning of the academic process;
- to provide comprehensive knowledge of the language, literature, and civilization of German-speaking countries, from their origins to the present day;
- to develop analytical and critical skills for the interpretation of literary texts and cultural documents;
- to develop practical skills in translation and interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous), as well as the use of translation technologies;
- to develop students’ capacity for professional reflection and lifelong professional development through an integrated professional internship within the programme.
Competences
The programme, through a wide range of courses offered over the three (3) years of study, encompasses diverse disciplines that ensure both general university education and specialized training in the respective field. It aims to:
- equip students with advanced knowledge of written and spoken German, as well as German-speaking literature and civilization;
- provide students with very good knowledge of a second foreign language (Language C);
- ensure excellent command of the Albanian language (Language A);
- develop students’ ability to communicate and switch between languages in various contexts and fields, using appropriate linguistic registers according to the interlocutors and communication situations;
- enable students to apply their acquired linguistic, philological, and literary competencies to conduct bibliographic research and prepare summaries and reports on specific academic topics;
- develop students’ ability to apply learning strategies for updating and deepening their knowledge of studied subjects in professional contexts, as well as for pursuing further studies;
- enable students to use translation technologies and digital tools in the processes of communication and linguistic mediation.
Employment and Professional Qualification Opportunities
The Faculty of Foreign Languages provides further training opportunities for students in coordination with employers. These training activities address various topics and are designed in accordance with students’ academic backgrounds and labour market needs. Students may be employed on a part-time basis in companies with which the Faculty of Foreign Languages has established Cooperation Agreements.Our students can pursue employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors, including educational institutions, cultural and tourism institutions, media organizations, publishing houses, and translation agencies.
Graduates of the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in German Language, Literature and Civilization may work as:
- teachers in foreign language centres;
- translators or interpreters (consecutive/simultaneous) in public and private institutions;
- editors/proofreaders in publishing houses and cultural institutions;
- tourist guides or communication coordinators with international clients in the tourism and hospitality sector;
- officers in external relations and public relations offices within public institutions, embassies, consulates, and German-speaking cultural institutes;
- researchers and cultural mediators.

The Bachelor’s Degree Programme in German Language, Literature and German-Speaking Cultures and Civilizations provides opportunities for further studies at the Second Cycle of Study and/or other study programmes provided for under the applicable legal and regulatory framework.

- Master of Science in “Technical-Literary Translation and Interpreting”
- Professional Master in “Pragmatic Translation” with a profile in “Specialized Translation”
- Master of Science in “Automatic Language Processing”, specialization: “Automatic and Linguistic Processing of Written Documents”
Erasmus+ Scholarship Programme Funded by the European Union
Our students have the opportunity to complete one or two semesters of study at partner universities abroad with which the University of Tirana – Faculty of Foreign Languages has established Erasmus+ KA1 inter-institutional agreements. These mobility opportunities are offered in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), as well as at partner European universities offering similar programmes in the fields of linguistics, literature, and translation studies
