On November 14-15, 2024, the Publishers’ Association and the Faculty of Foreign Languages organized three fruitful conferences for young translators, with the participation of three renowned translators each of whom highlighted the specific aspects of translation and the details that make the difference in achieving an accurate and suitable translation for its intended audience:
Ilir Baçi shared his experience regarding the challenges of using language to set the narrative in the right time and place when translating Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, in comparison to his choices in translating The Sense of an Ending, a novel by Julian Barnes, which he also translated. Baçi emphasized that translating such works requires special attention to preserve the style and essence of the author, while also adapting the language to suit the Albanian audience.
Edon Qesari discussed his experience translating Il Divano di Istanbul by Alessandro Barbero and the challenges of translating nonfiction literature. Central to his talk were the choices translators must make when faced with the difficulties of translating for a different audience, considering the historical context compared to the original work.
Saverina Pasho focused on the translation of children’s literature, exploring the challenges and difficulties in translating works aimed at young readers. She discussed whether children’s translations should be adapted, how to preserve the original work from simplifications, hegemonization, or naturalization in the name of preserving cultural differences and alterity, as well as the responsibility of the children’s translator in both aesthetic education and in shaping the knowledge of a child, who, unlike adults, has not yet formed their own “truths” and is eager to learn. The translator shared her many years of experience with students and colleagues, illustrating her theses and advice with examples from her translations from French to Albanian and vice versa.
The meetings were lively, with many questions, and were conducted in an interactive atmosphere.
