Ms. Olivera Presi, PhD student at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Tirana, has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation entitled: “Developing Intercultural Competence in English Language Teaching in a New Context of Higher Education Internationalization (A Study on New Techniques Exploring Students’ Intercultural Competence through Technology and a Rich Corpus)”, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Dr. Adriana Dervishaj.
The dissertation examines how intercultural teaching techniques, such as presentations, films and documentaries, cultural debates and case studies, contribute to developing critical reflection, empathy and cultural awareness among English language students in Albanian higher education. The research was based on a mixed-methods approach: questionnaires with 155 lecturers and 470 students from public and private universities, as well as semi-structured interviews with institutional stakeholders.
The findings show that intercultural competence develops best when teaching techniques are used in an integrated and structured way, and that the pedagogical model within the classroom is the key factor. The study highlights the importance of “internationalization at home” and offers recommendations for pedagogical practice and university policies.
The Faculty of Foreign Languages warmly congratulates Olivera Presi on this significant academic achievement and wishes her continued success in her scientific and professional journey! 👏
