DAY ONE OF THE TRAINING SCHOOL

“From Words to Worlds: A Training School of Lexical Innovation”

The Department of English Language welcomed the first day of “From Words to Worlds: A Training School of Lexical Innovation”, hosted by the Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Tirana, with the active involvement of Department members in ensuring the successful organization of this academic event.

🔹 Module 1 – “Fundamentals of Neology” was led by Prof. Judit Freixa, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and Prof. Cécile Poix, Université de Lyon.

During the module, participants explored how languages continuously evolve through the creation, adaptation and adoption of new words, focusing on:
• neologisms and their place within the lexicon;
• processes of new word formation;
• morphological, phonological, syntactic and semantic innovation;
• language borrowing and its sociolinguistic dimensions;
• the functions of neologisms and their pragmatic role in communication.

✨ The first day was marked by fruitful discussions, exchange of experiences and new perspectives on language change and lexical innovation.

This activity represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen international academic cooperation and enrich research in the fields of linguistics, lexicology and neology.
