International Scientific Conference “Didactics of Foreign Languages and Cultures: From Language Policies to Approaches for Multilingual Competence”

The Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Tirana, developed this conference in cooperation with the University of Korça, University of Shkodra, University of Vlora, University of Pristina, Kosovo, AAB University College Pristina, Kosovo, University of Warsaw, Poland, University of Poitiers, France, University of Ionia, Greece, Confucius Institute – UT, University Agency of Francophonie.

Topics of the conference:

  1. Multilingualism in the context of the Balkans and the profile of language education policy.

The place and function of foreign languages and languages of national minorities in the educational system and the implementation of European conventions.

The historical approach to the didactics of foreign languages and cultures from the beginning of the 20th century until today in the Balkans.

    2. Language policy at pre-university level

Foreign language teaching reforms in the pre-university education system and the expected impact on the quality of multilingual competence acquisition.

Curricular developments and their impact on teaching/learning foreign languages according to European standards.

Policy of continuous training of foreign language teachers of the pre-university system with multilingual and multicultural competences.

The role of textbooks in the acquisition of multilingual and intercultural competence.

    3. Language policy at the university level

The place and role of foreign languages in the University in relation to the challenges of its internationalization.

The need for curricular reorganization of foreign languages based on competences also at the university to respond to the demands of the time and the needs of the pre-university education system; mapping student-teacher competencies at the end of university studies.

Needs of preparation of foreign language teachers for primary school taking into account the features and specifics of teaching children.

    4. Multilingualism in the classroom and teaching/learning practices

Studies and references of teaching and learning practices to support students’ multilingualism.

The evolution of didactics is closely related to that of other fields, thanks to which it is reflected differently and renewed.

From the psychology of learning to neuroscience, it is clear that similar fields intertwine and participate in the evolution of thinking, especially by validating some old hypotheses, such as the transfer of skills from one language to another.

The expected papers will focus on connections, relationships between disciplines, interdisciplinary studies, which are the basis of complex approaches and possible influences on language teaching/learning.

    5. Innovation and digitalization in foreign language teaching/learning: current practice

Considering digital innovation as a component of didactics and learning is no longer a novelty.

The hybridization of teaching/training, the use of digital tools in the classroom or the development and evolution of teaching through digital learning platforms logically invites reflection on the effective contributions of this teaching and on the developments that will come in the near future for pupils/students by take into account the complexity of contexts, aiming to combine approaches (open sciences, MOOCs, etc.).

Recognition and implementation of the descriptors of the Supplementary Volume of CECRL related to the levels of digital competences of pupils, students and teachers according to levels from A1-C2.

    6. Initial and continuing training of Foreign Language teachers in today’s standards of the teaching profession

What initial and/or continuing training should be provided to foreign language teachers to take into account the complexity of situations while responding to public demands?

Acquaintance and training of teachers with methodological innovations and documents of the Council of Europe in the field of didactics of languages and cultures for the acquisition of multilingual and intercultural competences, both CECRL and its Supplementary Volume, which emphasizes language mediation as a tool for the acquisition of multilingual and multicultural competence at the Class.

Mapping the professional competencies of foreign language teachers.

    7. The quality of foreign language teaching and its evaluation

Methods, didactic tools, contemporary classroom practices for functional and quality teaching. Indicators for measuring the quality of teaching and the achievements of pupils/students in relation to the levels of international certifications.

Preparation of teachers and pedagogues with competences to evaluate and test the multilingual competences of pupils and students, based on fair and transparent criteria according to European standards.

Encouraging educational and decision-making policies in favor of designing national tests according to European standards which are internationally recognized as university entrance tests both inside and outside the country.
